Marketing is the bridge between an organization and its customers. It helps organizations reach, engage, and retain customers, generate revenue, and adapt to changing market conditions. Without marketing, organizations would struggle to compete, grow, and thrive in today’s dynamic business landscape.
In this employee spotlight, we shine a light on our Senior Director of Marketing, Jenna Boller. Jenna plays a pivotal role at Ocient by leading and overseeing the marketing strategies that help drive our company’s growth. Leveraging her extensive experience and deep industry knowledge, she designs and implements marketing initiatives across public relations, content, events, product marketing, analyst outreach, and much more.
Let’s learn more about Jenna’s background and see how she fits into her role here at Ocient.
Where are you based and how do you take advantage of our remote first policy?
I’m based in Los Angeles, California. I enjoy the fact that I don’t need to commute to work in LA traffic! The Marketing team spans all time zones in the continental United States, so it’s been really nice to have coverage across the team for Eastern through Pacific Time and to have team members who can traveling “locally” to events around the country. Being remote has enabled us to cover more ground as a marketing team than if we were all in one location.
How long have you been with Ocient?
2 years
What are some things you like to do in your free time?
I am currently VERY into watching K-dramas, specifically Korean romantic comedies on Netflix! That said, I am currently watching the latest season of Lupin. 🙂
What’s the next place you’d like to check off your travel bucket list?
I’d love to travel to Iceland and back to Norway during a time when the aurora borealis are visible.
What’s one thing you can’t live without?
My phone? Sleep? I figure I’m not alone in these! Aside from mobile devices and sleep, I really couldn’t live without music. Especially while working remotely, music is a great companion for me in between meetings throughout the day. I listen to anything from Broadway to K-pop to Hip-hop.
What’s your go-to comfort food?
Thai red or panang curry over steamed white rice. Delicious
What is one of your proudest career moments while working at Ocient?
This is a tough one as there have been many company and career highlights for me since joining the company. Launching our brand and product (e.g., emerging from stealth mode) was an incredibly rewarding body of work and series of launch moments that I am proud of. Seeing our team, brand, and logo on the “big stage” at NASDAQ earlier this year was also a proud moment for me! Watching my team members grow individually while scaling their impact for our brand and company is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. Leading marketing through various growth stages at a startup comes with a fair amount of challenges, and I am incredibly lucky to work with an amazing team who inspire me to bring my best to work everyday.
What career advice would you give your younger self?
I’d probably suggest: “don’t throw bad energy after bad.” This is paraphrased advice I received from a colleague at YouTube that has completely changed the way I work through challenges. Every organization has hurdles to work through, and the difference between dwelling on what’s wrong versus diagnosing an issue and channeling your energy to work through it constructively is significant. When I come to a challenge or roadblock, I’ll experience frustration, work to diagnose what’s going on, and then ask myself: “what’s the opportunity here? How can I work constructively to address and overcome this challenge?” Shifting my mindset has helped me stay centered and focused whereas a younger version of myself would have spent more time dwelling on the issues before mobilizing to drive change.
Would you like to give an employee shoutout?
I’m going to reach outside of my team and reporting line here to give a shoutout to Ginny McCright and Rashel Masters. Both Ginny and Rashel do amazing work for Ocient and have helped act as sounding boards for me personally and professionally at Ocient. Thank you, Ginny and Rashel!
