Ocient is full of bright-minded and hardworking individuals who push the boundaries of innovation at hyperscale. In our employee spotlights, we feature a selection from our cutting-edge talent pool. We spoke with Rashel Masters, a Documentation Team Lead, about her journey into tech and her passions both inside and outside life at Ocient. Her responsibilities include developing documentation processes and best practices, building a documentation team, and developing content for the documentation at Ocient.
When she is not working at Ocient, she enjoys traveling, staying active, and doing her part in helping the environment. In fact, she even started a Climate Action Group, but we will let her tell you more about that below.
Where are you based and how do you take advantage of our remote first policy?
I’m based in the Boston area, and I’m taking advantage of the remote-first policy by working where it suits me. I enjoy having the flexibility to work around my family’s commitments.
What are some things you like to do in your free time?
I like to watch movies, play tennis, and write creatively.
What’s the next place you would like to check off on your travel bucket list?
I’m looking forward to exploring some of the amazing national parks in the western United States, such as Yellowstone. I also would really like to visit southern France.
Ocient has 6 core values: Leadership, Customer-Focused, Inclusive & Collaborative, Efficiently Effective, Craft-Driven, Trustworthy & Ethical. Which core value do you resonate the most with in your daily working life?
The value that stands out to me is Inclusive & Collaborative. Every day at Ocient, I strive to listen to all perspectives and collaborate with everyone I work with to deliver a high-quality result. I incorporate everyone’s feedback so that the practices we establish today last well into the future. Also, Ocient demonstrates this value by including everyone in a weekly touch base meeting with the executive team so that all employees understand what’s happening at the company and can ask questions to learn more. It is something that is truly appreciated by all.
What do you find unique about your job at Ocient?
I’ve been passionate about sustainability and mitigating climate change for decades. I’ve spent my time recycling, composting food scraps, and ensuring my dwelling is as energy efficient as possible over the years. Also, I’ve taken action by serving on the recycling committee for my town, participating in climate action hours, voting, and educating coworkers on a variety of climate-related topics at my prior companies.
When I first started at Ocient, there was not much climate-related activity that I could join or explore at the company. So, I took it upon myself to create an internal Climate Action page that contains resources for learning about climate change and taking climate action in a variety of ways. I also created a Slack channel for climate-related discussion. After the positive response I received on the page and the channel, I scheduled biweekly climate action hours to maintain participation within the company throughout the year. I really appreciate being able to contribute to climate action at Ocient. Additionally, I commend Ocient for their support of various environmental initiatives externally and internally. Employees at Ocient feel empowered to discuss climate change and explore short-term and long-term actions that can make a difference in our communities and beyond. We share this one magical planet that we live on and that provides what we need, so we must be its protectors.
What advice would you give to someone entering the tech industry?
The technology industry is vast, so do what you can to explore different aspects (take classes, participate in different projects, meet different people, etc.) so that you understand what you are drawn towards and what skills come naturally to you. Also, pay attention to what values really resonate for you. Then, apply that understanding of skills and values to any prospective environment you want to try next to ensure that there’s a high match between what a future environment offers and what you need.
Would you like to give an employee shoutout to someone at Ocient who has inspired you or helped you out along the way?
Jenna Boller is a great inspiration as she sets the bar high for creating a marketing organization that delivers incredible branding, content development, and a comprehensive strategy for the future.
