Software Engineers develop and maintain complex systems, take robust challenges head on, and propel projects forward with efficiency and innovation. In this employee spotlight, we feature Senior Software Engineer, Jenny Peshansky. Jenny is on the Query Processing team at Ocient, which owns everything from the parser to the query optimizer to the VM. She has directed her efforts towards working on the optimizer, both improving existing functionality and implementing new features.
Let’s learn more about Jenny’s background and see how she fits into her role here at Ocient.
Where are you based and how do you take advantage of our remote first policy?
I’m based in Chicago, and though I love coming into the office, I also value being able to travel and see my loved ones. This winter, I was able to spend a full month visiting family and working from their house. Having the flexibility to go visit someone for an extended amount of time, while still being able to contribute to the success of the team, has been invaluable to me.
How long have you been with Ocient?
I’ve been with Ocient for almost a year.
What are some things you like to do in your free time?
I have a lot of different hobbies, and they vary over time. Lately, I’ve been really excited about knitting. I also crochet, and I’ve been meaning to learn to sew. I really enjoy fitness hobbies, like rock climbing and even flying trapeze. And I just started working on a sourdough starter so I can eventually bake my own bread.
Which Ocient core value do you resonate the most with in your daily working life?
I resonate the most with Inclusive & Collaborative. One of the most important things to me at Ocient is the level of collaboration my team has with each other, and the respect each member of the team gives to all opinions and ideas. It has been important both for my growth, and for the work we’ve been able to deliver.
What career advice would you give your younger self?
If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be to have confidence about the value of my own work. In the beginning of my career, I believed that my lack of experience and expertise meant my work could never be as good as that of a senior engineer. Now, I realize that early career is all about learning and growing. As long as you’re willing to take advice and learn from others, or do research independently if no one is handing out advice, you can produce work that is just as high quality – it may just take longer.
Would you like to give an employee shoutout?
I want to give the biggest shoutout to Andrew Park, who has been an excellent mentor and collaborator throughout my time here.
