Metadata provides concise details about data, simplifying the process of locating and engaging with specific data instances. It can include information about the source, accuracy, and completeness of the data that helps users understand how to use it efficiently. In basic terms, it’s “data about data”. Organizations use metadata to manage the quality of their data and maintain consistency across various data sources.
In this employee spotlight, we highlight a Senior Software Engineer on the Metadata Team, Jake Feehery. Jake primarily works on scalability and maintainability of the Metadata layer of the Ocient Hyperscale Data Warehouse™.
Let’s learn more about Jake’s background and see how he fits into his role here at Ocient.
Where are you based and how do you take advantage of our remote first policy?
I’m based in Chicago, but travel regularly whether it be home to Philadelphia or just somewhere warm to get a brief respite from the cold winters.
How long have you been with Ocient?
It’ll be 2 years in July.
What are some things you like to do in your free time?
I’m an avid reader and film buff. Here’s a list of my top five for each in no particular order:
For films: All That Jazz, Phantom Thread, Heat, Broadcast News, and First Reformed.
For books: Cat’s Cradle, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Blood Meridian, Catch-22, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
I’m also actively working on my golf game…
What’s the next place you’d like to check off your travel bucket list?
I just traveled to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for some hiking and skiing, so I’d say the next place I’d like to cross off the list is somewhere completely different like Hanoi, Vietnam.
What do you find unique about your job?
There is an organizational openness to learning from the top to bottom. People are eager to either share or receive takeaways from people’s experiences both in their team and across other teams. It creates a very conducive environment to experimentation.
What advice would you give to someone entering the tech industry?
Be open to opportunity and don’t be afraid to ask questions, especially early in your time at a company. People want to share their knowledge and help you develop in your career. I have had great projects and learning experiences spurred by asking what I thought was a silly question.
Would you like to give an employee shoutout?
I have to shoutout the entire Metadata Team for their support and feedback, especially Dave Boutcher and Pavel Yusim for their mentorship.
