By Ocient Staff
Ocient’s end to end solutions offerings enable organizations to streamline their data and analytics with little to no business disruptions thanks to the efficient work of our Solutions Team. This team is responsible for understanding and addressing the customers’ needs and creating tailored solutions to meet specific requirements and challenges the customers may be facing. This month, we are excited to feature a member of the Solutions Team, Evan Jiang, for our employee spotlight. Evan is currently focused on building the new loader, which is used for getting records into the database.
Let’s learn more about Evan’s background and see how he fits into his role here at Ocient.
Where are you based?
I live in New York City.
How many years have you been with Ocient?
I’ve been with Ocient for almost three years now.
What are some things you like to do in your free time?
After work, I’ll usually cycle between strength training, rock climbing, and playing Dance Dance Revolution, which is a game that I’ll contend as the best attempt at gamified cardio out there. This sounds odd, but I’m also somewhat addicted to digging through online music catalogs— I think this is similar to the part of my brain that likes to Google those tier-list-type questions like “Top 10 Best Soups“ or “Spiderman Movies Ranked”.
What is your go-to comfort food?
I don’t know if this is a comfort food so much as just one of my favorite foods but I have half of a watermelon carcass resting on my bedside table at the moment. There’s this all-you-can-eat hotpot restaurant that offers fresh watermelon slices, and you can build these little Jenga towers out of all the rinds. It might be coincidental, but I’ve noticed that the restaurant will replace the watermelon with oranges shortly after I get seated, so I like to imagine that management sees me come in and, in a panic, rushes to replace the melon before I can demolish it.
What do you find unique about your job/working at Ocient?
I think Ocient provides the opportunity to get to work on a great variety of projects. You can get to touch a lot of different parts of the codebase, whether that’s the Loader, components of the database, or even certain bespoke tools made directly for customers. If you’re interested in doing so, you can help with university recruiting or improving company internal processes. Personally, I think it’s been good for my career to wear a growing stack of hats, and I suspect Ocient facilitates this more freely than other companies.
What career advice would you give your younger self?
I would probably tell myself to discover coffee earlier and to sleep at less insane times. I would also encourage myself to spend more time working on pet projects with friends in college – I think that’s probably the most enjoyable way to learn.
