Employee Spotlight: Matt Bergman

Meet the Global Director of Sales Operations.

By Ocient Staff

Director of Global Sales & Operations Strategy Matt Bergman

Sales Operations and Strategy are fundamental to driving revenue growth and ensuring operational excellence within a global sales organization. By implementing effective sales compensation plans, standardizing reporting, and optimizing sales processes, these teams align closely with the company’s strategic goals and enhance overall sales performance.

In this employee spotlight, we highlight Matt Bergman, Global Director of Sales Operations. Matt’s responsibilities encompass sales compensation planning and administration of the Sales Incentive Plan, standardizing sales reporting across all teams for global consistency, and partnering with Sales and Marketing Teams to prepare business analyses for regional QBRs, forecast calls, and other key meetings. Additionally, he works closely with Sales Leadership to provide analytics and data management for sales planning, productivity analysis, and capacity management.

Let’s learn more about Matt’s background and see how he fits into his role here at Ocient.

Where are you based and how do you take advantage of our remote first policy

I’m based in the western suburbs of Chicago. I love our remote-first policy, which is shocking because 10 years ago, I did not enjoy working from home – the pandemic changed a lot of things.

How long have you been with Ocient?

2 years and 4 months

What are some things you like to do in your free time?

Outside of work, I’m actually quite boring. Working at a start-up is demanding of our time, so when I shut down, I enjoy spending time with my wife, daughter, and our pets. I also enjoy Yoga, but don’t practice as much as I’d like. My daughter has recently gotten me into anime, which has been good for bonding.

What’s the next place you’d like to check off your travel bucket list?

I actually crossed one of my bucket list recently. My wife and I have always wanted to visit several countries in Europe. This past summer, we took a bus tour across 6 countries in 7 days. The tour took us through UK, France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. It was a once in a lifetime trip for us.

Are you binge watching any shows right now?

My wife and I do a fair amount of binge watching – most recently, it was Baby Reindeer and Bridgerton.

What’s one thing you can’t live without?

My iPhone. Like most people on the planet, it is always attached to my hand.

What’s your go-to comfort food?

Hamburgers!

Which Ocient core value do you resonate the most with in your daily working life?

Trustworthy & Ethical – without this value as the foundation for everything you do, the other core values won’t matter.

What career advice would you give your younger self?

Buckle up! You are about to go on a wild roller coaster ride with lots of highs and lows. Throughout the journey:

  • Always remain positive.
  • Take pride in your work.
  • Perfection is the enemy of excellence. Be excellent!
  • When you get the opportunity to manage people, take that responsibility seriously. Value them, develop them, lift them up, and remember that their success is your success!
  • Learn how to deal with and thrive in stressful situations. It will help you both professionally and personally.

Would you like to give an employee shoutout?

When you’re transitioning from a large company, like IBM, back into the start-up world, it always helps to work with people you know and trust. As Chris Gladwin always says – “What we are doing is not easy!” Kumar Abhijeet and Laura Troutman were tremendous in helping me transition back into the start-up mindset and have really been there for me to lean on over the past 2+ years.
