By Ocient Staff
Ocient offers end-to-end solutions that enable organizations to efficiently and effectively take advantage of massive amounts of datasets. This would not be possible without the code masters of database integrations and those that work exclusively with “ET” in the ETL (extract, transform, load) pipeline. This week, we spoke with one of the code masters, Jordan Williams, about his passions both inside and outside of life at Ocient.
Jordan is a Software Engineer on the Solutions Team that recently won a Company Values Award— “Efficiently Effective & Craft-Driven”. Each year, a handful of people from Ocient are honored due to their bold display of our core values. Jordan earned this award through his hard work on making Ocient available in the Metabase universe by providing a community source driver. He continues to lead all work around connectors and provides functionality for customers daily.
Let’s dive into Jordan’s background and learn how he fits into his role here at Ocient.
Where are you based and how do you take advantage of our remote first policy?
Chicago is home, but I love the flexibility Ocient’s remote first policy provides me. Work and travel do not have to be mutually exclusive!
How long have you been with Ocient?
Time flies when you enjoy what you do – I have been with Ocient for almost 3 years.
What are some things you like to do in your free time?
Almost any sport-related activity gets my blood flowing. I also LOVE to travel and eat great while I’m at it.
What is the next place you would like to check off on your travel bucket list?
I traveled to South Africa pre-Covid 2020 so technically it’s already been checked off my bucket list, BUT I enjoyed the trip so much that I can’t wait to go back to spend more time in Cape Town. I still dream of Truth Coffee.
What is one item you could not live without?
I could not live without Foxtrot Crispy Cakes. I won’t do it. IYKYK.
What is one (or some) of your proudest moments while working at Ocient?
On the Solutions Team, we develop user facing applications and tooling (like a database connector, for instance) so it’s rewarding to hear from COPS how our software is making an impact in production.
What do you find unique about your job?
I have never felt pigeon-holed at Ocient. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to work on a high number of projects covering domains like: filesystems, user access control, single sign on, geospatial, ETL pipelines, etc. My career aspirations of becoming a generalist align very closely with Ocient which is :chefs-kiss:.
What advice would you give to someone entering the tech industry?
Never shy away from an opportunity to learn – getting out of your comfort zone promotes growth!
Would you like to give an employee shoutout?
I’d like to give a shout out to Mike Niedbala and the QA team for finding bugs (spoiler alert: none of us are perfect) before we ship!
