By Ocient Staff
Software Engineers on Ocient’s Loading Team spend their days optimizing the performance and dependability of data ingestion processes, ensuring seamless integration and delivery of data across Ocient’s solution. Their expertise in software development, coupled with their understanding of system architecture, is crucial in designing and maintaining efficient, scalable loading systems that support Ocient’s data-driven objectives.
In this employee spotlight, we highlight a member of the Loading Team, Helen Hu. Helen specializes in building the part of Ocient’s system that processes ETL/ELT data pipelines. She spends a fair amount of time creating the pipelines and testing them to ensure reliability.
Let’s learn more about Helen’s background and see how she fits into her role here at Ocient.
How long have you been with Ocient?
I’ve been with Ocient for almost two years now. It doesn’t feel like it’s been that long though! Seems like I find something new to learn about each week; that keeps me feeling new 😁.
What are some things you like to do in your free time?
Lately, I’ve gotten really into crochet. I’ve gone through four skeins of yarn in the last month and have accumulated about an armchair’s worth of amigurumi.
Are you binge watching any shows right now?
Right now, I’m watching old seasons of MasterChef, hoping to pick up some cooking skills by osmosis. Hasn’t worked so far, but there’s always the next season…
What do you find unique about your job?
One thing I find special about working at Ocient is the collaborative environment and the sense of camaraderie. I’ve seen that in some environments, each team, or even each developer, can be like an island, and communication across islands can be limited or difficult. At Ocient, folks from all teams have been very gracious about answering my (many, many) questions, and I’ve benefited a lot from everyone’s openness and willingness to teach.
What career advice would you give your younger self?
I’d probably just tell my younger self to remain open minded about your career path and not to be so afraid of taking the opportunities offered to you, even if you’re worried that you don’t have the skills needed to succeed. You’ll learn!
Would you like to give an employee shoutout?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my loading team! Specifically, I’ll call out Steffen Knoll, Thomas Smith, Evan Jiang, and Mike Niedbala since they all gave me a lot of help during my first few months at Ocient. Their guidance has allowed me to build a solid foundation for my work here.
