Ocient is a company full of innovative and energetic individuals that work at the forefront of hyperscale innovation. In our employee spotlights, we like to showcase a selection from our cutting-edge talent pool. This month, we spoke with Dashang Vaidya, a member of the Customer Operations and Product Support team, about his passions both inside and outside of life at Ocient.
The Customer Operations and Product Support team takes pride in being the one stop shop for the post-sales cycle of the product. Dashang helps monitor and maintain Ocient’s production systems to ensure our customers can use it how and when they want it. Let’s learn more about Dashang’s background and how he fits into his role here at Ocient.
Where are you based and how do you take advantage of our remote first policy?
I live in northwest suburbs of Chicago.
The remote first policy has many benefits in my opinion. I don’t have to commute if I don’t want to, I can meet up with friends for lunch more often, and if needed, I can run a quick errand before it starts pouring. Not to mention, I can either sleep longer or take long walks in the morning before commencing my 30 second commute to my home office desk. The biggest advantage of this policy is the flexibility it brings.
How many years have you been with Ocient?
I will be completing my second year at Ocient at end of the month.
What are some things you like to do in your free time?
I like to roam around! Whether it be in the subdivision, the town/village, the forest preserve, or the mall. It helps me know the area, find interesting plants, find new places to eat, bicker about the winter staple (aka the potholes) when driving, and say hello to new people. A courteous smile when you see someone or their expressive bumper sticker goes a long way in making others, as well as yourself, feel better!
When it was possible, I also used to visit O’Hare a lot. It was my “hunt for Terminal 4”. The O’Hare trip fed both the engineer and the photographer in me. Unfortunately, those days are now gone.
Another “offensive” hobby of mine is to figure out how to cook various dishes without following the widely agreed upon and accepted recipes. I can’t share much on this out of respect for the wonderful cooks out there who have been making mouth watering dishes for so many years.
Are you binge watching any TV shows right now?
Lately, I have been watching reruns of the shows from 60’s and 70’s. The local channels keep them coming.
What is something you cannot live without?
Food, friends, and family!
Did I forget to say food?
While we are on the topic…what is your go-to comfort food?
Pizza and Fries. They need to be well-done. Sorry my East Coast friends, I have to say “deep….dish….pizza”.
Ocient has 6 core values: Leadership, Customer-Focused, Inclusive & Collaborative, Efficiently Effective, Craft-Driven, Trustworthy & Ethical. Which core value do you resonate the most with in your daily working life?
These are the values that define us as a company, and I am at Ocient because I believe in these values. If I had to pick one, I would pick Trustworthy & Ethical. I can’t be customer focused if our customers don’t find me trustworthy, and I can’t be Inclusive & Collaborative if ethics are not on my mind every day.
What is one of your proudest moments while working at Ocient?
The 2 AM upgrade. We found an issue that we didn’t want to have in our product. Everyone pitched in, we coded the fix, built it, validated it, and once we were happy, we rolled it out.
What do you enjoy about your job?
The transparency. Many organizations don’t have this luxury either because of their size or because of their structure/beliefs. At Ocient, we are transparent across our organization with various aspects of our business. I would also like to add that the people here bring me to work every day. Personally, the people I work with are just as important as the technology I work on/with.
What career advice would you give to your younger self?
Make sure you enjoy what you’re doing. At times, the professional life will get stressful. Enjoying what you do will help you cope with the stress.
What advice would you give to someone entering the tech industry?
Don’t be intimidated by the task at hand, your perseverance will pay off. Subsequently, respect others even when you feel that they could do better!
Would you like to give an employee shoutout to someone at Ocient who has inspired you or helped you out along the way?
I wish I had a single name I could share as there are so many wonderful people I work with who have inspired me with their diligence, patience, and punctuality.
